Abstract

This chapter investigates the relationship between race and sport. Racism in Britain has a long history, being rooted in the power structure of the colonial period. As a consequence, racist attitudes and practices have become entrenched in the fabric of society. In recent years, many people in Britain may have thought that, in general, a climate for good race relations had been achieved. This misconception was vividly exposed by the violent incidents in Bradford in 1995, which appeared to be racially motivated. If racial conflict is powerful enough to erupt into violence in Bradford, it is likely that racial tensions exist to a greater or lesser extent in many other areas of the country. It is also likely that they impinge upon all aspects of life, including sport.

Some people think it’s all over … but it hasn’t gone away. (Ouseley, 1995, p. 1)
