Abstract
This title is, I have to admit, literally untrue. I have never been back to my school, and the last look that I took as I walked down the drive was precisely that — a last look. I remember the feeling of that July afternoon: that the school and I had somehow made peace with each other and even if I had no wish to return, then at least I did not leave with only harsh memories. Even so, the memories were clearly harsh enough, and when I came to write A Good School (1991) it was a surprise to me, and obviously to some readers, how angry I still was with the school. Speaking about the book recently I suddenly felt furious — there seemed to be no good reason for this, and yet it was an emotion too powerful to be left uninvestigated. The investigation is the theme of this paper.
