Abstract

The labour movement in Finland was not organized as a party of collectiveworking-class interest before 1899 when the Finnish Labour Party wasfounded. Until then, workers' issues were highlighted by liberal clubsinspired by the German social policy movement. The Finnish Social DemocraticParty (SDP) is the youngest of labour parties in Scandinavia. Incontrast to many other West European countries, industrialization of Finlandcame late. By the beginning of the Second World War half of the populationwas still tied to agriculture and forestry, and the lack of extensive industrializationoriented the party and its members to a rural radical socialist party.In 1903, the party adopted its present name and its programme was radicalized
