Abstract
In the Soviet Socialist Republic of Estonia, some of the first organizations in the USSR aiming explicitly at achieving national autonomy or independence were formed. Eventually, the formation and subsequent actions of the Estonian and the numerous other national movements led to the dissolution of the USSR.
