Abstract

A good, albeit pedantic, way to introduce a book on ‘Regulation of the Pharmaceutical Industry’ is to explore the definitional scope of the terms ‘pharmaceutical industry’ and ‘regulation’. This is not entirely straightforward because regulation shapes the industry and vice-versa. In some contexts, technological innovations may drive the construction of regulations and governance. For this reason it is important to examine the process of pharmaceutical innovation in order to understand regulation, as well as focusing on the role of the state and political systems.
