Abstract

The previous chapters have discussed the growing influence the European institutions are having on the Portuguese political system. Here a general assessment will be made of the Europeanisation of the Portuguese political system. Recently John Peterson stated that the European Union is already a political system, comprising different levels of policy decision making and formulation at the supranational level (Peterson, 1995). This has also been emphasised by Gary Marks, who speaks of a ‘multilevel governance’ with different levels of decision making (Marks, 1993).
