Abstract
According to Theodore Levitt (Levitt 1973), every society has three types of organizations – public, private, and organizations that are neither public nor private. Organizations in the last category have been variably labeled as nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), nonprofit organizations (NPOs), volunteer organizations, tax-exempt organizations, civic organizations, and so on. Levitt calls them the third sector.
