Abstract
It was only after the state rested its case and the youthful defense attorney Moses Salomon stepped forward to deliver his opening statements that the defense’s strategy became clear. For two weeks the mystery had thickened. How would the lawyers for the accused anarchists attempt to extricate their clients from the nooses dangling ever closer to them with each successive witness? Usually in cases of such magnitude some hints would have emerged at the beginning of the trial when the defense offered its rebuttal to the prosecutor’s opening statements. But the defense had waived this right at the outset and so the first inkling of the defense’s strategy came at this late date when Salomon outlined his case before calling his first witness.
