Abstract
The European Employment Strategy initiated in 1997 and the Social Inclusion agenda outlined in 2000 and promoted by Open Coordination Method (OMC) were intended to be milestones in the promotion of employment and social cohesion within Europe, along with economic growth and competitiveness. However, since social policies are based on the principle of national sovereignty and implemented within the different national contexts of the enlarged EU-27, the impact of these strategies in the individual member states is not uniform.
