Interpreting Competence: Nursing Staff and Family Members as Ad Hoc Interpreters in Hospitals

When patients lacking German language abilities come to German hospitals, communication problems tend to arise between these patients and the physicians treating them. These communication problems are generally solved by the use of ad hoc interpreters. The survey from Pöchhacker (2000) reveals that mostly bilingual family members (family interpreters) and nursing staff translate for them and enable understanding.
