Abstract

In Chapter 1, I described the aims of this book in these terms:

  • To explore the range of meanings and usages attached to the term ‘family practices’;

  • To discuss the relationship between the term ‘family practices’ and the more general use of the word, ‘practices’;

  • To consider possible ambiguities within and criticisms of this term and its usages and to explore how these might be met and developed in order to enhance our understanding of family life and its place within wider social contexts.

In the course of the discussion, and especially in Chapter 3, a fourth aim emerged. This was linked to the third aim but deserves separate consideration and this was to do with the place of the family practices approach alongside some other alternative approaches that were being developed at around the same time.
