Abstract

In 1808, the Finns could hardly foresee that yet another Swedish-Russian war would change Finland from a Swedish province to a Grand-Duchy of the Russian Empire in 1809, nor that Russia would accept, in 1917, that Finland broke out of the crumbling Empire to gain full sovereignty, nor that this would immediately be followed by a bloody civil war.
