Abstract
Despite all the attention placed on globalization and its processes, regional integration mechanisms continue to hold a pivotal position in world affairs. The global governance structure is marked by a patchwork of authority. This sense of complex design comes to the fore with respect to the myriad of regionalization projects currently in existence. Although the debates surrounding the European approaches and concepts maintain a privileged position, variants located in other regional projects deserve closer examination. This requirement is no more apparent than in the Americas where the process of regionalization has a long history and is currently becoming increasingly complex, contested and fluid.
