Abstract

Russia is generally considered one of the great powers in the world, and is as such of key importance to European security. After Vladimir Putin became president in 2000, Russia’s foreign policy became more ambitious and assertive thanks to its growing economic power and concentration of political power, at the same time as changes in the world offered opportunities that Russia could exploit. Dmitrii Medvedev, president since 2008, continues this policy in close cooperation with Putin as prime minister.
