Abstract
Standing back to look at world affairs, and prioritizing the untrammelled use of reason that standing back intellectually makes possible, requires fostering a very particular sense of self. We have to learn to turn part of ourselves into an Archimedean dais, that is, on which to stand mentally, and from which we can extend the lever of untrammelled reason in our bid to prise open the ways of the world.
