Abstract

When Livingstone arrived in England on 23 July 1864, while he was no longer the popular icon of the masses as on his previous visit, during his first week in England he accepted invitations from the Prime Minister, the Duchess of Wellington, Mr Gladstone and the Lord Mayor of London, to name but a few of the eminent people keen to associate with him. Lord Palmerston, the Prime Minister, was now 80, but Sir Roderick Murchison assured Livingstone that the slave trade was at the top of his list of priorities.
