From Welfare State to Self-Welfare: Everyday Opposition among Female Textile Workers in Łódź, 1971–81

Abstract

Recently, ‘Solidarność’ hunger marches of female workers, and more generally, women’s resistance in Communist Poland, have begun to attract scholars’ attention.1 An article by Padraic Kenney entitled ‘The Gender of Resistance’ revealed how powerful and subversive were the ways that women workers linked their ascribed roles as breadwinners, consumers and mothers during strike actions.2 However, when looking at the public commemoration of ‘Solidarność’, or remembrances published by former trade union activists, women suddenly become invisible. While celebrating the anniversaries of national struggles against the Communist party-state, one forgets, for example, that the claims of female workers during mass strikes in 1971 changed party-state social policy to a much greater extent than the famous upheaval of shipyard workers in December 1970.3 A chronicler of Łódź ‘Solidarność’ pointed even at a natural predisposition of men to strike actions and self-organisation: ‘In the case of a long-term sit-down strike, men usually show more determination and are more resistant to attempts at intimidation (than women)’.4
