Abstract
This chapter provides an account of challenges and opportunities of organic agriculture in Tanzania. A brief introduction on organic agriculture’s setting and its development in Tanzania is followed by a more detailed review of the development of the country’s organic production, processing and marketing systems. It is observed that export demand far exceeds the supply. This implies that there is need to circumvent production constraints to meet the demand. It is further noted that while promotion of organic agriculture in Tanzania has received great support from development agencies and NGOs, the contribution of the government has lagged behind. As the government has now expressed a desire to promote the sector and as further efforts are put into the development of awareness and knowledge of both producers and consumers, it is expected that organic agriculture has a promising future.
