Forgotten Campaigns: A History of Disease in Turkey

  • Chapter
Turkey’s Engagement with Modernity

Part of the book series: St Antony’s Series ((STANTS))

Abstract

This chapter examines the history of diseases in Turkey in the late nineteenth- and twentieth centuries and interprets the successful campaigns against these diseases as a modernisation project although the study could not cover all diseases and so some health issues and problems are left out. The following discusses various themes such as medicalisation, external influences, the state-building process, population, agriculture and development. It also attempts to understand why the issue of disease control has been underrated among the achievements of the Turkish Republic in terms of modernisation.
