Abstract
In the last decade, Spanish national public media have faced a dramatic economic and identity crisis, deriving from a lack of a clear definition of their role in Spanish society. But the new regulation promulgated in 2006 opened the way to a new era, which will be discussed in this chapter. The work starts by explaining the transformation process and the main characteristics of the public media institution, in the light of the new regulation. It then moves on to discussing whether the performance of Public Service Media (PSM) has been effective in the digital environment under the new strategy that has been adopted. Finally, it analyses the output of the television offerings in order to determine whether the new arrangements contributed to a better fulfilment of the public service role.
