Abstract
GREECE gained her independence from Turkey in 1821–29, and by the Protocol of London, of 3 February, 1830, was declared a kingdom, under the guarantee of Great Britain, France and Russia. The crown was accepted by Prince Otto of Bavaria, who ascended the throne 18 Jan., 1833, as Otho I. He was expelled on 23 Oct., 1862, which event was followed by the election, in 1863, under the directing guidance of the three guaranteeing powers, of Prince William, younger son of Christian IX, King of Denmark, as George I, King of the Hellenes. George I, who was assassinated on 18 March, 1913, was succeeded by his son Constantine, who reigned until 11 June, 1917, when the Allied Powers forced him to leave the country. Alexander, second son of King Constantine, who succeeded him, died on 25 October, 1920. Constantine was recalled on 19 December, 1920, reigned until his abdication on 27 September, 1922, and died in exile at Palermo on 11 January, 1923.
