Abstract
Alaska was purchased by the United States from Russia under the treaty of March 30, 1867, the purchase price having been 7,200,000 dollars. The country is not, in the political sense, a Territory, but only a District with no representative assembly nor any constitution. It is governed directly by Congress at Washington, and locally administered by a Governor appointed by the President of the United States for 4 years, and assisted by a Secretary, a Surveyor-General, and other officials.
