Abstract
If theoretical contributions from social scientists whose writings appeared between 1880 and 1920 can prove useful to contemporary researchers, one might expect later works to be more valuable still. However, as becomes immediately obvious for those with a comprehensive overview of the literature in question, the analysis of distinction has not followed any sort of cumulative progression. Many authors — from Goffman at the beginning of the 1950s to Bourdieu at the end of the 1970s — conferred the (somewhat uncomfortable) impression that they were starting from scratch. This chapter explores more recent sociological approaches from various schools of thought (neo-Marxist, functionalist) and key authors (such as Elias, Baudrillard and analysts of postmodernity). It also examines contributions from psycho-sociological and socio-economic angles.
