Abstract
Surgery carried out for cosmetic reasons became increasingly popular during the twentieth century and has established itself as a significant, if somewhat controversial, practice in modern medicine. Despite a significant resurgence and growth during the twentieth century, cosmetic surgery is not a purely twentieth-century phenomenon but has a long and complex history. This chapter will sketch what is known of the history of cosmetic surgery and how it has been practised over time in different parts of the world.
