Abstract
Partners feel energised if they have some control over one another’s feelings and responses. The sense of aliveness that comes from a satisfying relationship makes them feel vibrant and enthusiastic about life. Thus, a sense of control is essential to feelings of competence. Being successful in social life depends on mutual benign control, in which there is an exchange of emotional (psychic) energy. If a relationship is formed around benign control its non-competitive, creative and intuitive nature will make it more energising. However, if exploitation or manipulation is involved, relationships will be energy draining.
