Asian Englishes in the Asian Age: Contexts and Challenges

  • Chapter
Global Englishes in Asian Contexts

Abstract

The dynamics of Asian Englishes in ‘the Asian Age’ with ‘Asian Values’, ‘Asian Creativity’ and ‘Asian Constructs’ have altered the profile of world Englishes in challenging ways. The English language now comprises the largest number of English bilinguals: Just the two countries, China and India, have over 533 million users of English, almost equal to the total population of the Inner Circle of English (e.g. the USA, UK, Australia and Canada). The current, hotly debated avatars of globalization in technology, education and in a variety of cultural shifts continue to manifest in ‘globalization’ of Asian Englishes, too.
