Social Development

The main dimensions of sustainable development were discussed in Chapter 3. It was noted that sustainable development was originally given major international prominence by the United Nations’ World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) report, Our Common Future (WCED, 1987) which states that for any form of development to be sustainable there is need to take into account not only economic and environmental issues, but also the social dimension. Subsequent to this, the 1992 Rio Earth Summit provided the main policy direction with inclusion of environmental considerations into broader areas of policy decision-making.
