Abstract
The social unit of family furnishes a common metaphor for the Unknown. Human families typically include a husband-father, one or more wives-mothers, and children; the sexual relationship between husband and wife produces offspring; generations within a family may cooperate or quarrel; siblings may vie with each other for position; husbands may take multiple wives and concubines; wives may take lovers.
