The Celebrity Culture and the Designed Self

Abstract

Conventional wisdom has it that we live in a hyperindividualist age. But in many ways individuality has been diminished by the impact of the global I-Commodity Market. The global I-Commodity Market is a node in a network of markets and rating systems. There seems to be no historical and cultural depth, no inner anchoring to the self; and it is almost impossible to maintain a true sense of individuality beyond the rating of the global I-Commodity Market. Lives are reduced to careers and the narration of one’s lifetime looks more like a series of achievement graphs in the domain of career, excitement, and fleeting attachments than the biography of a human being with depth.
