Bestowing the Democratic Mantle

Abstract

In a society that reflexively venerates “democracy,” it is a great prize to appropriate this term successfully to a specific political arrangement. Immense legitimacy and prestige are instantly granted in a feat of lexical magic. After all, who wants to be labeled as antidemocratic? Every faction seeks to ride the democratic bandwagon. Those who dub egalitarian-minded governments that bestow countless welfare entitlements to appease popular clamor as “true democracy” are absolutely blameless in their determination. That terminological trophy should immediately be conceded; stripping anything of alleged democratic authenticity is pointless. Politics is not physics, in which basic terms have precise definitions. Those who insist that voice of the people certifies “real democracy” are no less correct than their opponents.
