Abstract

With a population of 5.6 million people, Maryland was the nineteenth most populous state in the United States in 2007. From 2000 to 2007 the state’s population increased by 321,858 people, and is projected to increase to 6.8 million by 2025. This 1.0% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. From 2006 to 2007 the state’s population did not have significant growth. The state’s 2007 per capita personal income of $46,646 was higher compared to $43,774 in 2006 and the sixth highest in the United States, some $8,082 above the national average. Per capita income in Maryland grew at a compound annual rate of 4.5% from 2000 to 2007, compared to 3.7% nationally.
