Abstract
Much of the story of British involvement in Chile for reasons of religion relates to contact with the indigenous peoples on Tierra del Fuego. There were four native cultures in the archipelago, two of those called Canoe Indians by Europeans and two called Foot Indians.
We plans to take’em back to Cape Horn in a couple of years, to teach the savages an’ cannibals Christian ways, an’ to lead up their heathen people to the light, an’ to teach’em English manners.
—Robert FitzRoy’s coxswain James Bennett
