Abstract
Attempts at describing a periodical are stupid, it might be argued, pace George Eliot, for
who can all at once describe a periodical? Even when it is presented to us we only begin that knowledge of its appearance which must be completed by innumerable impressions under different circumstances. We recognize the alphabet; we are not sure of the language.1
