Abstract

On 22 June 1971, the Unionist government, headed since March by Brian Faulkner, offered places on Stormont parliamentary committees to the SDLP. It was the first Unionist offer of any form of participation in political decision-making to Catholic moderates. This offer was accepted by the SDLP with some misgivings. After making this minor concession, the Unionist government then embarked on a military ‘solution’ to the unrest, a ‘solution’ which would lead to the total alienation of Catholic moderates from the state.
