Abstract

This chapter discusses the evolution of Israeli and Palestinian education systems and relevant developments on both sides in recent years concerning the teaching of history. Unsurprisingly in the context of this ongoing bitter conflict, we encounter two mutually exclusive nationalist historical narratives taught in Israeli and Palestinian schools alike. In the existing political stalemate, the fragmentation of the OPT (Westbank, Gaza, East-Jerusalem) and the weakening of the Palestinian administration (PNA), combined with a steady erosion of democratic standards within Israel, reform initiatives in the realm of education aimed at undercutting the existing conflict dynamic remain marginalized and often meet outright rejection.
