In Defense of Comrade Psmith: The Orwellian Treatment of Orwell

Chapter
Part of the Political Philosophy and Public Purpose book series (POPHPUPU)

Abstract

This chapter considers how Orwell’s work has become a “literary Rorschach test, an intellectual inkblot onto which detractors and followers alike project all their fears and hopes” interpreting Orwell to support their own political predilections. The author explains how his personal experiences of, among other things “democratic centralism,” and the British class and caste structure shaped his perceptions of Orwell and why those perceptions could take different facets from other commentators.
