Abstract
This chapter explores the building of the popular argument ‘they deserve it’ and the reasons behind such a statement. It focuses on how social contexts shape social behaviour, citing the Stanford Prison Experiment in the United States and the extensive Argentinean’s dictatorship tradition as a predictor of an authoritarian mindset. It explores the relation between crime and culture and between crime and economic inequality, providing an overview of Latin America crime scene. It also provides a definition of zero-tolerance policies or ‘iron-fist’ policies.
