Abstract
Illuminating the intrinsic essence, energy center and archetype in a role is the primary focus of character work. A framework for initiating character research, called character elements, is based on Stanislavski’s teachings. The elements are origins (nationality and roots); drives (actions and wants); issues (objectives and needs); relationships (identity and status); Age (experience and maturity); ability (opportunity and skills); arc (destiny and beliefs). Explorations of the interplay of acting and being consider questions of behavior, physiology and psychology. Behavior focuses on essences, including level of consciousness and sentient nature. Physiology focuses on energy centers, including feeling and the senses. Psychology focuses on archetypes, including thought and emotion. Character notes provide examples of an essence, energy center and archetype as related to specific roles.
