Italian Civil Servants and Fascism in Geneva

Abstract

This chapter investigates the political identities of the Italian civil servants and their relationship with Fascism. By analysing the first instances of pressure from Italian Fascism on the Italians working for the League of Nations, it explores how Fascism was present in the Secretariat and how it influenced the Italian officials through a process of ‘Fascistization.’ The chapter analyses the institutional and diplomatic conflicts this process caused to the League, as well as its international, national and local consequences. Through the study of the Plainpalais brawl, and the experiences of Giuseppe Rocca and Giacomo Paulucci, this chapter reveals the extent of the Fascistization process in the League’s administration, showing how Fascist Italy was an element of serious disturbance for the Secretariat as early as in 1926.
