Abstract
This chapter looks at the history of judicial guarantees of free speech and its impact on societal development, reviewing historical changes from printing technologies to the modern information society, as well as changes in the preconditions for people to access information and to participate in society. Potential future developments are also evaluated in the light of present-day events and crises.
