Mediating Institutions Between Religion and the Workplace

Abstract

Workplace chaplaincy has been a sustained institutional approach to the relationship between religion and a secular world. This chapter tells some of the story of workplace chaplaincy in the UK; discusses the Christian churches’ institutional involvement in the Thames Gateway, and particularly with its workplaces; and describes examples of relationship-building between the churches and workplaces in Germany and the USA. The chapter concludes that the Church has found mediating institutions useful as it has attempted to relate to industry and commerce, recognises that chaplaincy is a particularly significant mediating institution, discusses organisational forms that have been found helpful, and encourages the churches to establish effective mediating institutions, and particularly workplace chaplaincies.
