Conclusion and Discussion

Part of the New Perspectives on Chinese Politics and Society book series (NPCPS)

With the theories of the local entrepreneurial state, the entrepreneurial city, and corporatism revisited, this chapter discusses the theoretical implications of the empirical findings in this book. The local entrepreneurial state is an indispensable player in China’s urban redevelopment. It is also multilayered, where the municipal and district authorities have subtle power struggle. For the long-term governance of new urban spaces, it is the district government and its subordinate street office that develop corporatist intermediations with business owners for collaborative urban governance. Finally, this chapter concludes the book with a brief comment on the social costs of China’s urban redevelopment.
