Abstract

Every philosophical system, from its outset, tries to make a claim for itself, based on self-examination, i.e., what the philosophy is about. Even though this meta-philosophical exercise may not be resolved one way or the other, it becomes the basis of the authenticity of the philosophy in question. So what African philosophers are asking by asking whether there is an African philosophy or not is simply about the source of that philosophy. The attempt to answer the question of what African philosophy is, different from any other kind of philosophy, has produced two distinct discursive formations—the universalists and traditionalists. In this chapter, Chukwu uses the antagonism between the two discursive formations to generate a bibliographic survey of the works done in African philosophy so far.

The former last name of the author is Agwuele.
