Abstract

This chapter presents a short historical overview on the civil war in Sri Lanka (1983–2009), recognizing the ethnic and cultural dimensions of Sri Lankan Tamils, and acknowledges the complexity of conditions which have contributed to an increase in migration over decades, expanding the Tamil diaspora. In the next sections, we identify some of the general issues that have arisen within the broader Sri Lankan Tamil community in Toronto as a result of migration/forced migration and among the Adhiparasakthi community as well. Voices and concerns are presented with regard to issues of healing, heritage preservation and cultural identity.
