Abstract
We begin by commenting on the origins of the ethnographic method in the field of anthropology and from here chart its spread across the academy. We note, in particular, that it has developed differently in disparate fields, and it is here that we carve out the objectives for our own book. We place an analytical emphasis on transdisciplinarity as a vital—but hitherto neglected—pedagogical opportunity while at the same time identifying common challenges to the ethnographer, irrespective of subject area.
