Abstract

The future of the ethnic Rohingya minority remains uncertain. Central to their uncertainty is the question of the group’s political identity and hence its belonging. The introduction chapter reflects on the conventional theories of identity, such as ethnicity, citizenship (imposed by the state), and multiculturalism, that have not only failed to offer a national identity to the people, but have, instead, made them stateless. It places “the problem” in view of the intricacies of the Myanmar /Bangladesh political context in which identity politics and displacement are situated.
