Abstract
In this chapter, we describe the various ways in which people of color in Mississippi have resisted the state’s oppressive policies and practices. We describe the events around the desegregation of Mississippi’s higher education institutions, including the state’s role in those events, the racialized violence used to preserve segregation, and the courageous actions of people of color to disrupt the system of segregated education. We describe adult education efforts in the state, including Freedom Summer and the Freedom Schools, that have contributed to resistance in Mississippi. We then discuss contemporary resistance efforts, including how museums contribute to resistance work, community organizations working for equity and social justice, and campus activism related to racial justice.
