Memories on the Move

Part of the book series: Migration, Diasporas and Citizenship ((MDC))

Abstract

In this chapter, the relationship between memory and migration will be explored by discussing the role of photographs in the case of four Uruguayan female migrants living in Catalonia, Spain. By exploring the selection, transportation and placement of photographs carried on their first migratory trip, it analyses how these women—together with their photographs—strive to maintain individual and family memories in a context where their free movement is constrained and can be seen as a possible impediment to biographical continuity.

Emotional engagement with photographs and their capacity to refer to people, places and memories assume crucial roles in the process of migration. Discussing the role of photographs in migration thus helps to provide insight into the roles that stability and mobility play in memory building that extends transnationally.
