Abstract
Sport, globalization, and democracy reflects upon what we currently know, at the time of writing, about this strand of research. The chapter asks important questions: where has this relationship come from? Why is it important and where is it going? It argues that while sporting leaders might not have world problems and issues uppermost in their mind, but nor should they wash their hands off the social and political choices that they make. Sport can help win important public arguments by working for the public and on behalf of the public. As the genesis of a new and tense world threatens any fragile global notion of humanity, the role of sport in building social capital or civil society becomes even more important, because democracy depends on spaces that can help to foster dialog and the construction of the common good. The examination of Sport, Globalisation, and Democracy reflects upon previous interventions on the subject while not shirking from the questions that face the contemporary world and the place of sport in these questions.
