Abstract
In this chapter, the use of globalization theory in research on sport—drawing upon history, sociology, cultural studies, media studies, and political science—is selectively reviewed. This is followed by vignettes on two sport-based media events (SMEs)—Russia 2018 (men’s FIFA World Cup); and France 2019 (women’s FIFA World Cup). These vignettes are based upon a mix of sources including fieldwork at the events, synthesis of published research of critical scholars, access to background data, and critical interpretation of SME documentation and discourse. The accounts are spiced with reflections from my personal fieldwork, study visits, and observations in France, South Africa, Brazil, the US, and China. The strengths and weaknesses of globalization theory and conceptualization are reflected upon throughout the chapter. A final section poses questions about where research might most usefully go in any continuing debate. The discussion is spiced with reflections from my personal fieldwork, study visits, and observations in France, South Africa, Brazil, the US, and China.
